mgat4g

This is the community wiki page for the gene mgat4g please feel free to add any information that is relevant to this gene that is not already captured elsewhere in Xenbase

mgat4g is a newly annotated gene

01.17.2020

During a review of the MGAT4 family of genes across a range of vertebrate species, David Webb from the NIH/NCBI identified an unnamed MGAT4* gene in a conserved location in Xenopus.

Dr Webb thinks that the unnamed paralog is a present as a pseudogene in some mammals, but it appears to be a functional protein-coding gene present in reptiles and amphibians.

Background information.

MGAT4* is found in the following conserved genome region across taxa: MICALCL> … PARVA> … TEAD1> … MGAT4* … RASSF10> … ARNTL> … BTBD10.

See OrthoDB for a full list of orthologues: https://www.orthodb.org/?level=&species=&query=271528at7742)

In Xenopus we currently have 4 mgat family genes: mgat4a, mgat4b, mgat4c, and mgat4d.

Considering mammals have MGAT4E and MGAT4F, and in consultation with the HGNC, we followed the alphabetic series, and named this new MGAT4* gene mgat4g in Xenopus.

As this locus is uncharacterised, we use the gene name "MGAT4 family member G", as the product may not actually function as a mannosyl glycoprotein acetylglucosaminyltransferase.

Xenopus tropicalis: Entrez GeneID:100489718 is currently called LOC108715280 alpha-1,3-mannosyl-glycoprotein 4-beta-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase C-like, is now named MGAT4 family member G ( mgat4g)

Xenopus laevis: the L homeolog is Entrez GeneID:108713740 (on Chr4.L), is renamed MGAT4 family member G L homeolog ( mgat4g.L ), and Entrez GeneID:108715280 (on Chr4.S) is MGAT4 family member G S homeolog (mgat4g.S )
