nomenclature notes

As discussed in HGNC-55, HGNC, MGI, and other nomenclature groups have agreed to assign the gene symbol PALM2AKAP2 to the merged genes that had been formerly treated as distinct PALM2 and AKAP2 genes. There is ample support for the separate PALM2 (upstream) and AKAP2 (downstream) transcripts/proteins. In addition, transcription spanning the two (currently annotated as readthrough) is common and deeply conserved throughout gnathostomes, and readthrough transcripts are found in mammals, birds, reptiles and bony fishes. The exon connecting the two is also conserved. Ciona intestinalis also has good evidence of a PALM2-AKAP2 transcript, without apparent separate transcription of a downstream AKAP2 transcript.

XenBase has merged GenePages for palm2 (XB-GENEPAGE-6039053) and akap2 (XB-GENEPAGE-961311).
