summary for human METTL2B from NCBI

This gene is a member of a family of methyltransferases that share homology with, but are distinct from, the UbiE family of methyltransferases. Alternatively spliced variants which encode different protein isoforms have been described; however, not all variants have been fully characterized. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

nomenclature changes

06.16.2021

Human name has changed for Entrez Gene: 55798. From methyltransferase like 2B to methyltransferase 2B, methylcytidine

08JUNE 2023

Human name has changed for Entrez Gene: 55798. From methyltransferase 2B, methylcytidine to methyltransferase 2B, tRNA N3-cytidine

21MAY2026 Synteny suggests that Xenopus mettl2b has been misidentified and is not a true ortholog of human METTL2B, but instead is the orthologous to human METTL2A.

NCBI orthology predictions confirm this!

THus the genes in Xtrop and Xlaevis on chr10 and 9_10L have been renamed mettle2a.
