=Summary for human gene from NCBI=

This gene is a member of the glycoprotein hormone beta chain family and encodes the beta subunit of luteinizing hormone (LH). Glycoprotein hormones are heterodimers consisting of a common alpha subunit and an unique beta subunit which confers biological specificity. LH is expressed in the pituitary gland and promotes spermatogenesis and ovulation by stimulating the testes and ovaries to synthesize steroids. The genes for the beta chains of chorionic gonadotropin and for luteinizing hormone are contiguous on chromosome 19q13.3. Mutations in this gene are associated with hypogonadism which is characterized by infertility and pseudohermaphroditism. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Summary for human gene from NCBI

[provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

nomenclature updates

08.23.2019

Human name has changed for Entrez Gene: 3972. From luteinizing hormone beta polypeptide to luteinizing hormone subunit beta.

Xenopus genes names updated to match Human name.

16APR2026

Xenopus gene name changed from LOC100490615, lutropin subunit beta-like to lhb, luteinizing hormone subunit beta.

LOC100490615 (GeneID: 100490615, XP_002939281.1, XB-GENE-29080259) and lhb (GeneID: 100038205, XP_002939280.1, XB-GENE-486113). These two genes are adjacent to each other.

Based on protein alignment and synteny, GeneID: 100490615/XB-GENE-29080259 is the ortholog of human LHB and GeneID: 100038205/XB-GENE-486113 is the ortholog of human SAXO3.

Xenopus tropicalis GeneID: 100038205/XB-GENE-486113 is also being changed from lhb to saxo3.
