The vesicular monoamine transporter acts to accumulate cytosolic monoamines into vesicles, using the proton gradient maintained across the vesicular membrane. Its proper function is essential to the correct activity of the monoaminergic systems that have been implicated in several human neuropsychiatric disorders. The transporter is a site of action of important drugs, including reserpine and tetrabenazine (Peter et al., 1993 [PubMed 7905859]). See also SLC18A2 (MIM 193001).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008]

nomenclature updates and annotation notes

13OCT2026

Xenopus gene nomeclature was updated, changing from LOC100487393 and LOC108711604, chromaffin granule amine transporter to slc18a1.4/.L, solute carrier family 18 member A1 gene 4 /L homeolog based on an analysis of protein phylogeny and synteny, and NCBI ortholog calls/assertions for SLC18A1 & SLC18A2 genes.

Note that there are numerous duplications of slc18a1 genes in X. tropicalis and X. laevis on Chr3/3L/3S, and that true slc18a2 genes in Xenopus are found on Chr7/7L, a conclusion supported by synteny.
