This is a protein-coding alpha tubulin gene, that's conserved going back at least to the origin of Osteichthyes. It has been pseudogenized within placental mammals. | |||
HGNC refered to it as TUBAP5 (HGNC: 54799). ZFIN called it tuba8l (ZDB-GENE-030131-9167) and Xenbase calls it tuba3c (XB-GENE-5788469). | |||
It invariably resides in this gene order: CYB5R1>...ADIPOR1>...KHL12>...RABIF>...tuba5>...MGAT4E<...KDM5B> and usually encodes 449 aa. IN Xenopus, tuba5 is on chromosome 2. | |||
DW could not determine where this gene became a pseudogene in mammals. Platypus and opossum clearly conserve the 449 codons as well as aardvark, cat, tree shrew, and lemurs. Some rodents like Marmota and Ictidomys plausibly encode 449 aa but it's clearly a pseudogene in human, mouse and rat and is likely a pseudogene in cow, pig and horse too. | |||
After discussion across gene nomenclature committes, tehHGNC agreed to call the protein coding gene TUBA5, and the psuedogene in human TUBA5P. |
