This is the community wiki page for the gene prom1 please feel free to add any information that is relevant to this gene that is not already captured elsewhere in Xenbase
gene annotation notes
06OCT2026
Note that [until today] the X.laevis prom3.L gene was misnamed/wrongly identified in the v10 genome release as prom1.L. Also. X. laevis S genes where not recognized or represented on Xenbase, and the prom3 genes were not named as such, but carried an uniformative LOC symbol.
To correct this, according to/with reference to the findings reported by Han & Papermaster (2011), there are 3 prominin genes in X. laevis & X. tropicalis: prom1, prom2 and prom3.
Xb curators agree with published assessment, as it is also supported by synteny and BLASTp. We have renamed genes and moved some gene models to accurately reflect this gene family as follows:
True "prom1" are on Chr1/1L, shown on XB-GENEPAGE-853792: Xla.prom1.L gene ID:100316924 (previously referred to as proml1.L on NCBI, but not repressented on Xenbase). Xtr.prom1 gene ID:100036621
True "prom2" genes are on Chr3/3L/3S: Xla.prom2.L gene ID: 100316926 Xtr.prom2 gene ID:100485371 Note that there is a partial BLASTp hit to a Xla.S model (432bp; Xlaev1017014929m.g) which potentially may be recognised asa pseudogene, prom2p.S. No renaming or models moves were necessary for prom2.
True "prom3" genes are on Chr7/7L/7S, shown on XB-GENEPAGE-29079342: Xla.prom3.L gene ID:100316925 (previously mis-named prom1.L) Xla.prom3.S gene ID: 108697433 Xtr.prom3 gene ID: 100488690 NOTE prom3 are NOT represent in mammals! We have added the Chr3.S model to the genepage, and moved the X.laevis Chr3.L model to this genepage from XB-GENEPAGE-853792 (previously called prom1.L).

We sincerely thank Dr. Brittany Carr at the University of Alberta for drawing our attention to this messed up nomenlcature!!
