In vitro study systems such as cell lines represent valuable tools for furthering our understanding of many aspects of development and cell biology, especially when in vivo studies are inpractical or indeed unethical (ie would cause jarm and suffering to teh animals). Cell lines developed in Xenopus are used in a many fields, including studies of the immune system.

The following table lists all known cell lines developed in 3 Xenopus species: X. laevis, X. tropicalis and X. borealis., and includes one cell line from a X. laevis x X. muelleri hybrid.
