zyg11b
This is the community wiki page for the gene zyg11b please feel free to add any information that is relevant to this gene that is not already captured elsewhere in Xenbase.
annotation notes
Should the Xenopus genes be called zyg11a or zyg11b?
Human genome has 2 x 'ZYG-11 family member A, cell cycle regulator' loci, ZYG11A and ZYG11B.
Mouse also has 2 orthologous genes, but Chick and frog have a single named copy of this gene. Chick gene is called 'a' and Xenopus genes are called 'b' .
XB asked RefSeq David Webb: In your expert opinion, should the 'A' gene take precedence for the Xenopus orthologs, or do we keep it as is, zyg11b/.S/.L ?
David Webb's response:
It looks like ZYG11A arose as a tandem duplication of ZYG11B in the common ancestor of amniotes and was secondarily lost in birds and monotremes.
As we can see in the ZYB11B.pdf tree, the ZYG11* proteins in amphibians, birds, teleosts and lobe-finned fish cluster with the ZYG11B proteins of mammals so I think it's fine to keep zyg11b as the symbol in Xenopus. File:ZYG11B.pdf.pdf
ZYG11A will be restricted to therian mammals and non-avian reptiles.
RefSeq will ask CGNC to change their symbol to ZYG11B.
